Ready for some fun facts regarding how Santorini was
ultimately named? Thira is Santorini's official name. Venetians created the
name Santorini in 1153 after an Arab geographer by the name of Edrisi. The
words Santa and Irene (Saint Irene) also influenced the name Santorini. This
came from the church in the valley of Therassia or the early Christian basilica
in Perissa. Initially, the island was known as Kallístē, meaning "the most
beautiful one" before it was called Santorini.
I'd love to help you plan your trip, so be sure to pick
