Perched high atop the Festungsberg hill, the Hohensalzburg
Fortress stands as one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. Construction
on the fortress began in 1077 for the purpose of protecting the city and
housing the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg. Over the years, the fortress served
not only as a defense for the city but also as military barracks and a prison.
The perfectly preserved castle remains a visible landmark and an unmistakable
feature of Salzburg’s world-famous skyline.
