One of the most
photographed sculptures in Salzburg is tucked in under the southern archway of
the city’s main cathedral. The Pietá, also known as the “Cloak of
Consciousness,” is one of the most famous works but artist Anna Chromy. With
similar statues in Monaco, Prague, and Athens, the empty
cloak is a symbol of what remains in life. The inscription at the base reads,
“The empty mantle as a symbol of that which survives us: the love we gave, the
works we created, the suffering we bore.”
