Perched on a rock by the water, looking
longingly out to see is a bronze statue of the Little Mermaid. Given to the
city as a gift in 1913 by Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen, the statue has become a
beloved symbol of the city. She was inspired by the Danish ballet dancer, Ellen
Prince, after Jacobson saw her perform in the Royal Ballet's rendition of the
Little Mermaid. Although she has been vandalized several times, the Little
Mermaid has always been restored to her glory.
