In Bali, fruit is sold fresh the day it is
picked, and is not sprayed with chemicals or genetically modified. A native
paradise fruit is durian, a thorny fruit popular with locals. Jackfruit is a
sweet fruit found everywhere on the island and is often used in local desserts.
Guava is also widespread around the island and is used locally for herbal
medicine. Despite the variety of paradise fruits, bananas are extremely popular
and important in Bali. With at least 42 varieties, bananas are not just eaten
peeled, but they can be fried and served with honey, and the stem is even used
in dishes with spicy meat.
