Maori wood carvings play a crucial role in Maori customs and traditions and have as much meaning and significance behind them as their tattoos. All over New Zealand, you will see these distinct carvings in places like meeting houses, on canoes, and even weapons. Much like their tattoos, the carvings tell a story from the past. Long ago, carving was a way of preserving a tribe’s history in a time before things were written down.
