One of the distinguishing features of the
Maori tribe is the tattoos. The art of tattooing dates back to the early days
of the Maori tribe and remains a significant part of their cultural identity.
The head is considered the most sacred part of the body by the Maori people.
This is why you’ll traditionally see men with their whole face covered, while
women typically only tattoo their chin, lip, and nostrils. While the tattoos
all look similar in design, no two are the same. Each person’s tattoos
represent their journey through life, including rank in the community and
milestones they may have hit.
