The Bronze Horseman is an impressive monument that was erected to
honor the founder of St. Petersburg, Peter the Great. Ordered by his successor,
Catherine the Great, the statue depicts Peter leading Russia. His horse is
trampling a snake, which represents the defeat of the enemies of Peter. The
pedestal the statue stands on is known as the Thunder Stone, which is the
largest stone known to have been moved by humans.
