The African people brought the Samba dance with them to
Brazil in the 19th century. Its fast rhythmic steps characterize it, and a swaying,
rocking motion of the dancers made to vibrant beats. This dance is mostly
performed in 2/4 time, but it can also be done in three steps to create a 3/4
rhythm.
The Samba dance is teeming with African beats and rhythms,
and, over the decades, Latin cultures have made their mark on Samba music and
dance. The dance surpasses color and social class and is a unifying element in
Brazil. It's a prominent attraction in Carnival celebrations in Rio and is seen
throughout the year in ballrooms and clubs everywhere.
