What to Expect of Danish Food

Danish cuisine might not seem very appetizing at first, but the traditional nordic flavor combinations might just surprise you. One of the country's most popular dishes is, of course, smørrebrød. This traditional Scandinavia open-faced sandwich is considered one of the world's greatest sandwiches. Consisting of a piece of buttered rye bread, topped with cold cuts, pieces of meat, eggs, or fish, cheese or spreads, and garnishes, this local delicacy can be enjoyed at any hour of the day.

The Food Culture of Greece

Known for having one of the healthiest culinary cultures in the world, Greece has served as a model for the Mediterranean diet. A hot, dry climate sets the tone for the Greek menu, which relies heavily on fresh food. Fishermen provide an array of seafood from the Mediterranean, and farmers cultivate lemons, eggplant, artichokes, and other fresh fruits and vegetables. Of course, you can't talk about Greek cuisine without mentioning olive oil, which is essential. Ancient Greece was known for having one of the highest life expectancy rates in the world, which could be traced back to the incredibly fresh and healthy diet.

About the Royal Guard and the Royal Family

The Danish royal family is one of the oldest living monarchies in the world. Headed by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II, the royal family tree can be traced back over 1,000 years ago to the first Viking kings of Denmark. The royal family currently resides in the Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen, where the family has resided since the 18th century. Visitors can tour the palace along with experiencing the daily changing of the guards at noon.

How Olives are used in Greece

Olive oil has been a staple in the Greek diet for centuries. In fact, Greece is the 3rd largest olive oil producer in the world and the biggest exporter of extra virgin olive oil. It is estimated that Greeks individually consume around 26 liters of olive oil a year. Luckily, olive oil is considered a healthy fat, so it is packed with health benefits, including its ability to help reduce blood pressure and loads of antioxidants. Be sure to pick up a bottle or two for yourself and your friends back home!

Discover the Waterfront of 18th Century Amalienborg Palace

Built to be a major European capital city, Copenhagen's waterfront is naturally at the center of city life. Right outside of the Amalienborg Palace, you'll find plenty of shopping and dining along the river. Back in the 18th century, the best place to be was right outside of the palace, and that is still very much the case today. After watching the changing of the guards, go for a stroll along the river and see what shops you'll discover.

This History of Parthenon

The Parthenon is perhaps one of the most famous ruins in all of Greece. Built almost 3,000 years ago, the temple was constructed for Athena, the goddess of war, who was also considered the patron of Athens. Each side of the Parthenon shares a story with hand-carved statues. One side shows the Greeks and centaurs. Other areas show Athena at birth, fighting Poseidon for Athens, and Greeks parading for Athena. The Parthenon has since suffered severe damage and decay, but the importance of the temple in ancient Greece is not lost!
