The Olympics

Historic Borsen


Built in 1625, Børsen is one of the oldest buildings in Copenhagen. Solidifying the status of the city as a powerhouse for trade and commerce, the stock exchange building had 40 stalls for vendors and was one of the most magnificent architectural structures of its time. The Old Stock Exchange was then surrounded by water from three sides so that ships could unload their cargo directly at the wharf in front. The dragon tail-like spire on top of the building is said to protect the building from fire and enemy attacks, which has proven to be true over the centuries.

This History of Parthenon


The Parthenon is perhaps one of the most famous ruins in all of Greece. Built almost 3,000 years ago, the temple was constructed for Athena, the goddess of war, who was also considered the patron of Athens. Each side of the Parthenon shares a story with hand-carved statues. One side shows the Greeks and centaurs. Other areas show Athena at birth, fighting Poseidon for Athens, and Greeks parading for Athena. Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen is a must for anyone with a taste for royal history. Built originally as a home for noblemen, the place became home to the royal family after a fire burned down the  Christiansborg Palace in 1794. Amalienborg is famous for its Royal Guard, called Den Kongelige Livgarde. Every day at noon, you can experience the changing of the guards, as they march from their barracks through the streets of Copenhagen and end up at Amalienborg, where the changing of the guard takes place.

The Famous Little Mermaid Statue


Perched on a rock by the water, looking longingly out to see is a bronze statue of the Little Mermaid. Given to the city as a gift in 1913 by Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen, the statue has become a beloved symbol of the city. She was inspired by the Danish ballet dancer, Ellen Prince, after Jacobson saw her perform in the Royal Ballet's rendition of the Little Mermaid.
