There's always some blurred lines when we talk about
traditional music in Brazil; between rural and urban; between indigenous, Luso-Hispanic, and African; and between
conventional art and popular music. It's the same mix of varied
cultures and amalgam of different musical practices that produced such a
variety of music, most of all samba, that ascended to embody modern Brazil.
As time passed, the three strands of indigenous,
Luso-Hispanic, and African song, music and dance traditions began to mix. They
created a harmonious blend of cultures that gave birth to samba (not to be
confused with the US ballroom dance, which draws only modest influences from
the Brazilian genre).
Music lovers everywhere can find joy in the music of Brazil. Let me help you get there so you can explore that musical tradition of this colorful land.
